Respect Victoria, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Office for Women are pleased to share with you the Victorian Government’s first elder abuse prevention campaign - Respect Older People: 'Call It Out'. https://www.respectvictoria.vic.gov.au/campaigns/respect-older-people-call-it-out br /
Latest statistics from the World Health Organization estimate that, globally, around one in six people over the age of 60 experience elder abuse. Given that it often goes underreported, the real number could be much higher.
Respect Older People: 'Call It Out' aims to raise awareness of elder abuse as a form of family violence, demonstrating the early warning signs and subtle ways it can begin.
Like other forms of family violence, elder abuse can take many forms, such as physical assault and emotional neglect. If early behaviours become normalised, elder abuse can rapidly escalate and lead to a higher propensity of violence towards older people.
The campaign puts a spotlight on financial abuse – one of the most prevalent forms of abuse reported for Victorians over the age of 65.
We also have a range of printed materials to help Victorian families, healthcare providers, and frontline service agencies to recognise and act on the early signs of elder abuse. Thank you to everyone who has ordered materials already – we will distribute those as soon as they become available.
To place an order for printed materials, please email: contact@respectvictoria.vic.gov.au.
